Misano, 31 August: Flood waters from heavy rain brought an early end to today’s free practice for Sunday’s San Marino e Riviera di Rimini Grand Prix. The abnormal weather conditions meant that only the morning session was completed with Honda LCR rider Carlos Checa posting the 13th fastest time on a wet track.
Today’s conditions provided little guidance for Sunday’s 28 lap race, the first grand prix at Misano since 1993, with the circuit now being used in the reverse direction for MotoGP. The main benefit today for Checa was an opportunity to learn the circuit and make valuable progress with suspension set-up and tyre choice for wet conditions. Because of the cancellation of this afternoon’s practice the free practice session tomorrow morning (Saturday) will be two hours, not the usual one hour.
CHECA: “At the beginning my feeling in wet conditions was not positive but we changed the set-up and switched to a different profile rear tyre and the bike felt normal. With this weather the main point was to improve the wet set-up and to learn and understand the track. The grip level in the wet was OK, better than I expected, although there are some bumps and ripples, especially at the final corner. Now I hope we can rider in the dry tomorrow and be ready for the race.”
The flood waters also meant the cancellation of the afternoon 250cc practice with Irish rider Eugene Laverty using the morning session to learn the 4.1 km circuit.
LAVERTY: “The track is not complicated and was easy to learn. In practice I went out on cut slicks just as the rain got heavier which made it difficult to do fast times. I don’t think I lost too much today, if it’s dry tomorrow the track will be different anyway.”
